Understanding ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental conditions that affects a person’s ability to maintain attention and concentration, especially on non-preferred tasks. It can also affect a person’s activity level, ability to manage impulses, ability to maintain organization, as well as other skills a person needs in order to effectively plan, focus, and manage tasks.

There are different types of ADHD

Predominantly inattentive presentation may include:

  • difficulty with staying focused on tasks or conversations

  • trouble following through with activities, tasks, or schoolwork

  • trouble organizing school, work, or household responsibilites

  • trouble remembering appointments, belongings, or assignments

  • difficulty avoiding distractions

  • trouble paying attention to details

  • difficulty completing certain tasks

  • frequently losing things

Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive

presentation may include:

  • fidgeting

  • feelings of restlessness

  • excessive talking

  • interrupting or blurting out answers

  • difficulty awaiting turns

  • acting before thinking out consequences

  • feelings of needing to be constantly on the go

Combined Presentation

Includes significant symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.
